One supermodel may no longer loves diamonds. In fact, she may even loathe them after what she's had to go through these past few months with a heavy war crimes trial accuing former Liberian president Charles Taylor. We're talking about the Naomi Campbell blood diamonds testimony, of course.
In case you've been living under a rock, the famed supermodel has been subpoenaed to testify that was she was given blood diamonds by Taylor. She did everything she could to keep herself out of The Hague courtroom, even postponing her court date to August 5, but in the end, the date arrived with a vengeance.
Charles Taylor is accused of using to finance the war in Sierra Leone. Naomi Campbell. He denies the charges. Model Naomi Campbell is involved because Taylor reportedly gave her rough diamonds as a gift during a dinner for then-South African president Nelson Mandela. Campbell is not on trial herself but can provide worthy evidence that she was given diamonds by Charles Taylor, that are allegedly not conflict-free.
At the trial, Campbell admitted she received diamonds from people who worked for Taylor. She said she was woken up in the middle of the night by two men who knocked on her door and gave her a pouch as a gift. Campbell went back to bed and only looked in the pouch in the morning to discover what she described as tiny little pebbles.
She called the trial a big inconvenience and said she was afraid that her family would be in danger. She also said that she had never heard of Liberia when the dinner took place. The only reason she believed the diamonds were from Taylor was because it was suggested by guests like Woody Allen's ex-girlfriend actress Mia Farrow the next day.
She told the court that she later had the intention of handing the diamonds to Nelson Mandela's Children' sFund head Jeremy Ratcliffe, a friend of Campbell's, so that he would give them to charity. She never did, though.
Despite being on trial to provide evidence against a man who is charged with 11 war crimes, Campbell appeared calm in the courtroom. She arrived at The Hague wearing a form fitting beige suit and her hair styled in a beehive. Prosecutor Brenda Hollis asked her questions.
Farrow and her former agent Carol White are due to give testimony on August 9.
