African Diamonds Still Covered In Blood

by Diamond News Agency
Despite the actions of the Kimberley Process, introduced by the United Nations to certify that rough diamonds entering the market are conflict-free, African countries and their governments have found ways around the language that the UN drafted to continue

Time for a New Definition of “Blood Diamonds”

by Diamond News Agency
The suspicion is not that Mugabe took over the diamond fields to legitimize the diamond trade in Zimbabwe, but rather to take control of the illegal diamond trade to generate revenue for the now nearly-empty treasury.

Zimbabwe Looking To Upgrade Equipment, Not Conditions

by Diamond News Agency
Still, Mpofu argues that, with more modern mining equipment, the Chiadzwa mine could produce as much as $600,000 in diamonds per day. He was unable to produce an amount that is mined each day now. The Kimberley Process investigation team is expected to check into the numbers of carats reported as exports, as those numbers are often withheld when the diamonds are mined through violence.

Violence Increases at Chiadzwa, Soldiers Killed

by Diamond News Agency
Although the Mugabe-controlled government of Zimbabwe claims to have taken command of the Chiadzwa diamond fields near the city of Mutare, violence continues. In the past week, however, it is four soldiers who have been killed in two separate incidents.

Angola Deports Illegal Diamond Miners, Tensions Remain

by Diamond News Agency
Police Commander Francisco da Cruz said that the number of illegal diamond miners skyrocketed after some diamond companies abandoned their mines near the Congolese border. In June alone, he said, more than 700 illegal immigrants were deported back to their native Congo. He claims that now, having discovered the primary locations in which illegal mining is taking place, the police have gone on several missions to stop it. He did not elaborate on their methods.

Kimberley Process Has Failed, Says Architect of Scheme

by Diamond News Agency
The leading creator of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, designed to stop the trade of blood diamonds, has said that he “stomped out” on the plan, as it was no longer working. Ian Smillie, considered the “grandfather” of the KPCS, says that the Scheme is headed for a complete breakdown as both governments and the diamond industry itself are failing to act against gross human rights violations.

Kimberley Process Group Somehow Finds Its Way to Zimbabwe

by Diamond News Agency
Although the language of the Kimberley Process only classifies blood diamonds as diamonds directly used to fund a rebel uprising, certain offenses committed since the original document was written have shown that the definition needs to be broadened. This includes countless acts of violence that had allegedly been carried out by the army of Robert Mugabe’s ZANU-PF.

An Indignant Charles Taylor Takes the Stand

by Diamond News Agency
The choices he made in funding the RUF and ensuring that they were adequately armed would be enough to hold him as a criminal. That he used Liberian rebel soldiers in Sierra Leone, a country in which he had no legal business getting involved, makes him guilty of international crimes.

Angola Responds to Congolese Immigration with Violence

by Diamond News Agency
Because of the brutality in Congo, tens of thousands of people have crossed into Angola, looking for diamonds in the crocodile-infested northern rivers. These rivers deliver almost 25% of Angola’s diamond revenue. In a country that is among the world’s top 5 diamond exporters, the government is protective of their natural resources.

Zimbabwe Keeps Mining Alive With Child Labor

by Diamond News Agency
Rather than busy themselves with the agreed-upon evacuation of the Marange fields, President Mugabe’s ZANU-PF Party is allowing more than 300 children to mine for diamonds, handing them over to the soldiers, who, in turn, hand them to Mugabe’s senior lieutenants.

Diamonds Only Part of the Africa Question

by Diamond News Agency
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, violence has skyrocketed since the beginning of 2009. Not only are rebels after the gold that is so easily found in Congo, but they have also learned the value of the minerals that go into some of the West’s most common devices. Every cell phone, laptop, and mp3 player requires minerals that are mined in the Congo. And out of the more than $2 billion spent by the international community on peacekeeping and emergency assistance for the Congolese, only one-tenth of one percent of that money addresses the issue of conflict minerals.

De Beers Open Diamond Route for Tourism

by Diamond News Agency
Birdlife South Africa, and environmental group focused on maintaining birds and their natural habitats. The Diamond Industry has the potential to destroy a lot of the vegetation and wildlife in South Africa and other countries, so the organization made a proposal to De Beers and the Oppenheimers in 2004. Together, they signed a memorandum of understanding between De Beers, Oppenheimer & Son, and Birdlife South Africa. Since then, De Beers has funded upgrades to accommodations and facilities; initiatives to protect birds, insects, heritage sites, and trails; conservation initiatives; and the training of 14 birding guides and 5 cultural guides.

Kimberley Process Certification Of Zimbabwe Diamonds A Milestone

by Diamond News Agency
Zimbabwe Finance Minister Tendai Biti says the Kimberley Process certification of Zimbabwe diamonds is a milestone in the way Zimbabwe's capital city Harare controls its resources. It's a "glorious occasion" for Zimbabwe, Biti added. "For me, it was the issue of a sovereign country being denied the right to control its own resources… our right to self-determination, which was the cause of the war of liberation." He complimented the organization's review soon after the certification of gems from the Marangue diamond minefield. The Kimberley Process is in Zimbabwe for a review of the Chiadzwa Diamond field operations. The Chiadzwa diamonds have already been certified by the Kimberley Process.

Diamond Deposits Will Not Benefit Zimbabweans, Says Public

by Diamond News Agency
More large diamond deposits have been discovered in Zimbabwe but there is rampant skepticism as to whether these discoveries will benefit ordinary Zimbabweans. There are three significant diamond deposits where abuse from the military has been rampant. They are located in Binga, Tsholotsho, and in parts of Masvingo province along the road to South Africa. These are separate from the fields in Chiadzwa

Diamond Market Rebounding in Botswana

by Diamond News Agency
Forecasters are predicting that 2010 diamond exports in Botswana could be the richest ones since the country first discovered its diamonds in 1967. This is an incredible accomplishment since the diamond production in 2010 from Debswana mines is likely to be 30 percent lower than 2008. It's obvious that there has been a strong recovery in price for diamond markets.

Botswana GIA Invests In Diamond Education

by Diamond News Agency
Botswana's Gemological Institute of America is investing $5 million in furthering its diamond education and the diamond grading skills of the 30 locals employed by the institution. Botswana's GIA, which was established in September 2009, that they are hoping to enhance the diamond educational courses offered at the institution, which will improve and develop diamond grading skills using a gem microscope or jeweler's loupe.
