luxury ipadA luxury iPad encrusted in diamonds and priced a $1.2 million (converted from pounds to dollars) has debuted this month as the world’s most expensive smart tablet. The diamond iPad, also described as the world’s most luxurious gadget, was launched by Camael London, a company specializing  in the gold, silver, and diamond customization of gadgets.

The iPad is decorated in 18K gold and encrusted with 1000 diamonds, with the Apple logo crafted out of black diamonds, creating a dramatic color contrast with the bright diamond background.

Camael is a luxury brander that customizes electronic gadgets such as iPhones, Blackberrys, iPods, and luxury-car key fobs for the high-end consumer market. They also offer a less expensive, albeit costly,  golden iPad for £89,999.00, and a bespoke four-ounce solid gold and diamond encrusted iPhone 4 set with over 1000 VVS diamonds for £22,950.00.

"The ability to have created a truly unique piece for every individual client is proving a huge draw. Although our most expensive item is the £750,000 iPad, we are already getting enquiries about customising that!" said Melissa Clarke of Camael.

Camael advertises its diamond products as hand crafted by skilled workers. Customers can customize devices with diamonds and/or other precious stones, and in white, yellow, or rose gold. The pricey products are also independently certified and inspected.

“The gifts are the ultimate in luxury for people who want beauty but don’t worry about price,” said a company spokesperson.

Camael is among a niche of mostly European companies who specialize in jewel bespoked gadgets. Pat Says Now, a Swiss manufacturer of individual computer mice and accessories, offers the world’s most expensive diamond-studded computer mouse for approximately $25,000. The device is available in a scattered-diamond or diamond flower pattern. Similarly, Belgian jeweler Casa-Gi sells a pair of golden earphones encrusted with 118 brilliant cut diamonds for $5,253. The ear buds will be showcased in the Millionaire Fair in Moscow, in November, along with a diamond-encrusted blue tooth headset.

Despite the current recessionary backdrop, market research indicates that the luxury market is said to grow by 10% in 2011 and “luxury shame” among the high-end consumer demographic is lessening. Anohter noteworthy point is that luxury sales in China are outperforming those in the rest of the world.
