The world’s most notorious bachelor George Clooney, who has been the subject of engagement rumors with each of the many, many women he has dated, has recently purchased a Cartier diamond ring for Elisabetta Canalis.  The couple has been dating since the summer, and the ring is said to be a ‘symbol of his commitment’ to the new romance.

Other sources have said that this is, indeed, an engagement ring for the woman whom he has recently invited to share both his home in Studio City, California and his Lake Como retreat.  Friends have said that the rumor is untrue, and, as usual, Clooney’s representatives have been unavailable for comment. 

The Ocean’s Eleven star began dating his young Italian beauty after breaking up with former Palms Casino cocktail waitress Sarah Larson.  Clooney seems to prefer to stay away from relationships with Hollywood starlets, perhaps hoping that the press will be less interested.  Not so.  Pictures of him with Canalis cuddling, kissing, and holding hands have been all over the media.  Everyone is waiting to see which woman will be able to get the 48 year-old heartthrob to settle down.

He sometimes seems to enjoy the speculation, laughing and joking that he’ll think about getting married after Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie walk down the aisle.  Pitt and Jolie have famously stated that they will not marry until it is legal for anyone to marry, citing the controversial laws banning gay marriage in many states.  If Brad and Angelina do finally wed, Clooney will doubtlessly come up with another reason not to. 

In the meantime, he continues to enjoy his sex symbol status, showing up at events on his motorcycle and wearing leather.  This is the mystique that keeps people riveted to his every move, whether in Hollywood or Italy.
