Diavik Canadian Mine Named One of Canada’s Top Employers

Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. has been recognized for the second time as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The company has been described as “one of the most unique work locations in Canada (and the world)” by the editors of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. The mine has been rated for its good employee benefits, emphasis on employee safety, and working environment.
The mine is a joint venture between Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto—a company based in London, England that operates metal, coal, and diamond mines around the world— and Harry Winston Diamond Limited Partnership (which owns jewelry retailer Harry Winston Inc. and has a 40% stake in the mine). Diavik processes diamond ore from its open pit and produced over six million carats annually.
“I would like thank everyone for their hard work and professionalism which contributed to our garnering this national recognition,” said Alasdair Martin, Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. Acting President and Chief Operating Officer.
Diavik Mine employs about 640 people and is located on a remote island some 186 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of Yellowknife— a booming diamond industry hub and region rich in natural resources that boasts striking natural scenery. As a result of its isolated location within a permafrost zone, production workers are flown in for two weeks at a time in live in hotel-like accommodations that include free food and a fitness facility. Many of the mine's employees are residents of neighboring communities.
“Diavik is a responsible organization: Responsible toward its employees, to the communities it works with and within, and toward the environment,” said an employee of the mine.
