Christies auctions yellow diamond for $6.6 million in its New York Magnificent Jewels auction (Manhattan). The rare 33.77-carat diamond was sold to an anonymous bidder (the hefty price tag amounts to approximately $201,000 per carat). The diamond, known as “Vivid Yellow” is pear shaped and has been designated as one of the rarest gemstones in its class by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), for its intense, highly-saturated yellow color--a result of nitrogen levels. The diamond’s grading report classifies the stone as Fancy Vivid, the highest color saturation available for a diamond. Only about one in 10 million diamonds qualify as Fancy Vivid!
“The Vivid Yellow literally blazes with color, unlike any yellow diamond I’ve ever seen. In the world of diamonds, a naturally colored stone of this incredible color and size represents a freak occurrence, an extremely rare geological phenomenon. The appearance of this extraordinary gemstone on the market truly represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for top jewelry collectors,” said Rahul Kadakia, head of Jewelry at Christie’s New York.
The Magnificent Jewels sale netted $46,599,650. “Despite recent volatility in the financial markets, the jewelry world continues to hold strong with active participation from top private collectors and members of the trade for superb gems and jewels," said Kadakia.
