Yellow Diamond Found At Crater Of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas

8/3/2010 4:49:57 AM  Simona Kogan
Winnsboro, Texas resident Angela Vickers has found a 2.93-carat yellow diamond at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas.  She was on her first family vacation with her husband and three children.

The family went searching for diamonds in the 37 1/2-acre diamond search area after a friend told Vickers of the park.  They searched for three hours until she found the diamond stone.  It was a bright yellowish color, the size of a pea, and it’s a round diamond with a pyramid shape on top.  She named it God's Blessing Diamond because she felt that God led her to it, right in the shade.

Over 75,000 diamonds have been found at the Crater of Diamonds State Park since 1906 when farmer John Huddleston owned the land.  Uncle Sam, the largest diamond ever found in the United States, was found at this park in 1924.  It's a white diamond with a pink cast and was worth 40.23 carats.  Later, the area became a state park in 1972 and Amarillo, Texas resident W.W. Johnson found the 16.37-carat Amarillo Starlight white diamond in 1975.

Crater of Diamonds State Park is the eighth largest diamond deposit in the world with diamonds in a surface area.  It's also the only diamond-producing site in the world open to the public.  An average of two diamonds are found in the park each day.  The park says if you find it, you can keep it but they do provide free identification and diamond certification.
You can also find other types of rocks at this rock lover's goldmine.  Gems found include peridot, jasper, barite, and quartz.

The most common diamonds found at this state park are white diamonds, brown diamonds, and yellow diamonds.
