Why You Need A Jewelry Appraisal

Buying a diamond is no tiny purchase – even if the stone sometimes is. Unfortunately, an often overlooked aspect of purchasing a diamond is making certain you get the jewel appraised. A jewelry appraisal will provide two key features: a detailed description of the jewel and an estimate of its replacement cost.
A thorough appraisal will properly describe the diamond by providing the following information:
The type of metal: This can be gold, silver, platinum, etc.
The type and specs of all gemstones: Shape, cut, clarity, carat weight, color and overall proportions should be included. So, if the jewel is a 2 carat silver princess cut of diamond VS1 clarity, it should be described as such in precise detail.
An overall description: The description should specify the style, type of setting, and all other information that can be used to imagine the stone.
A Picture: This should be a good, clear picture that accurately reflects how the diamond looks.
A proper appraisal should sufficiently describe the piece of jewelry so it can be recreated, if need be.
The replacement cost is an obvious but extremely valuable piece of information. In essence, you want to know approximately how much it would cost to replace the piece with as similar a piece as possible.
By now it is probably quite clear to you why you should obtain an appraisal. That’s right – the main reason is to insure the piece. Basically, the appraisal explains the value and type of the stone being ensured and provides a proof of ownership. In case the jewel is stolen, you will be able to collect what is owed to you.
There are several ways to obtain an appraisal, the primary being at the place of purchase. However, since you want the best possible appraisal, sometimes it is worth going to an independent appraiser.
