Mumbai GIA LabToday, the Gem and Jewelry Export Promotion Council announced that the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will begin grading diamonds weighing up to 2.99 carats at its Mumbai laboratory to help assist India’s growing diamond trade.

Previously, diamonds larger than 1.99 carats were graded at other GIA facilities, outside of India.

Nirupa Bhatt, Managing Director of GIA India, said that the lab has “worked diligently” to engage the nation’s diamond industry. He also stated that the fact that higher carat weight diamonds are frequently submitted for grading shows an increasing awareness of the Mumbai lab.

In addition to issuing Diamond Grading Reports and Diamond Dossiers, the Mumbai lab also grades pearls and colored gemstones.
